Bhaichung Bhutia (born 15 December 1976) is a former striker and torchbearer for the Indian national football team.
Due to his football shooting abilities, he is known as "Sikkimese Sniper".
I. M. Vijayan characterized Bhutia as "God's gift to Indian football."
Bhutia began his career with East Bengal Club.
He was the first Indian footballer to sign a contract with a European club - Bury in 1999, and only the second to play professionally in Europe, after Mohammed Salim.
He also joined the Malaysian club Perak FA.
Bhutia has won the Nehru Cup, LG Cup, SAFF Championship three times, and the AFC Challenge Cup on an international level.
With 82 international caps under his belt, he is India's second-most capped player.
He is also India's second-youngest international goal scorer, following Jerry Zirsanga, when he scored his debut goal against Uzbekistan at the age of 18 years and 90 days in the 1995 Nehru Cup.
Bhutia is well known off the field for winning the reality television show "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa".
Bhutia, who has a football stadium named after him, recognizes his contributions to Indian football (the first player to receive such recognition while still playing).
He has also received other honors, including the Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri.
In Delhi, he created Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools in collaboration with Carlos Queiroz and Nike in October 2010.
Bhutia declared his retirement from international football in August 2011.
On 10 January 2012, he played his final match for India against Bayern Munich at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi.
Bhaichung Bhutia grew up in a farming household.
Bhutia's passion for sports was initially frowned upon by his parents.
His father died, but he began his schooling at St. Xaviers School in Pakyong, East Sikkim, with the help of his uncle, Karma Bhutia.
He received a football scholarship from SAI at the age of nine to attend the Tashi Namgyal Academy in Gangtok.
In his home state of Sikkim, he went on to play for many schools and local clubs, notably the Gangtok-based Boys Club, which was managed by Karma.
His performance at the 1992 Subroto Cup, when he was named "Best Player," brought him to the attention of the football world.
Bhaskar Ganguly, a former India goalkeeper, recognized his potential and assisted him in making the transition to Calcutta football.
In addition to football, Bhutia competed in badminton, basketball, and athletics for his school.
He dropped out of school in 1993, at the age of sixteen, to join the professional East Bengal F.C. in Kolkata.
He moved to JCT Mills in Phagwara two years later, and the team went on to win the India National Football League in the 1996–97 season.
Bhutia was the league's best scorer, and he was selected to make his international debut in the Nehru Cup. He won the title of "Indian Player of the Year" in 1996.
He returned to East Bengal in 1997. Bhutia is the first player to score a hat-trick in a local derby when he scored one in East Bengal's 4–1 victory over Mohan Bagan in the 1997 Federation Cup semi-final.
In addition, in 1999, he became the 19th footballer to earn the Arjuna Award, which the Indian government bestows on players for "exceptional achievements" in national sports.
He was instrumental in the East Bengal Club's victory in the ASEAN Club Championship.
Bhutia was dubbed "man of the match" after scoring a goal in the final, a 3–1 victory over Tero Sasana. With nine goals, he was also the highest scorer in the Championship. In the same competition, Bhutia also scored in a 1–1 tie against Petrokimia Putra and five goals in a 6–0 win against Philippine Army.
Bhutia scored 12 goals in the 2003–04 season as East Bengal won the league by four points over Dempo.
He was a member of the East Bengal team till the end of the 2005–06 season. He was named "Player of the National Football League" by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in his final season, after scoring 12 goals.
